Different Types of Craft Beer

Craft beer is not defined by one single flavor or type. Deadly Sins Brewing, one of the top craft beer breweries near Orlando, knows this firsthand. The different types of craft beer can be quite delicious, each in their own unique way. Those who are acquainted with craft beer will know that there are many different types of craft beer to select from and it is best to have a resource where you have all the types at your disposal. If you have been craving quality craft beer in a unique environment and want to stop searching “breweries near me,” contact us at Deadly Sins Brewing.

Types of Beers You’ll Run Into

There are many different types of craft beer available and there is constant innovation within these styles that expands the scope of craft beer altogether. However, these are a few popular types of craft beers available at most American breweries.

  •       Pale Ales: Pale ales are those that are strongly flavored with hops. Because it utilizes predominantly pale malt, it results in its pale color.

  •       Lagers: Lagers are typically a type of beer that is conditioned at a lower temperature. It may be a range of subtypes within it that run from pale, golden, amber, to dark. Pale lager, however, is the most widely consumed and commercially available type of beer.

  •       Porters: A porter is a dark type of beer that is developed from well-hopped beers that came from brown malt. Many times, the porter is referred to side by side with the stout as they are very similar in nature.

  •       Stouts: A stout is a dark beer that is similar to a porter. However, it includes roasted malt or barley, hops, water, and yeast. The term “stout” was actually used as a generic term for the strongest porters, which is why the two are often intertwined.

  •       Brown Ales: This style of beer is dark amber or brown in color and it is top-fermented. While the color may be similar to other darker beers, it does not share the same flavor profile.

Different Kinds of Hops in Your Craft Beer

If you are a fan of craft beer in Orlando, there is a good chance you have stopped by to sip a draft with us at Deadly Sins Brewing. If so, you have discovered our passion for crafting the finest brews around. At Deadly Sins, there are no shortcuts. We do it right every time. That’s why we take such extraordinary care in selecting the perfect hops for each brew.

Why the Hops in Your Craft Beer Matter

We know that even experienced craft beer fans may wonder, “what are hops?” We believe that every beer lover should understand the relationship between the right hops selection and that foaming glass of golden amber beauty. With that in mind, we thought we would offer some insight into the hops in your craft beer.

What Are Hops?

The flower of the hop plant, or Humulus lupulus, is the source of all hops. About 80 different varieties are available for use by brewers, with more always under development. Hops are generally divided into three categories:

  • Bittering – high acidity gives the bitter taste to beer and can be adjusted during brewing to add more or less bitterness

  • Aroma – less acidic, they add aroma which adds to overall flavor and enjoyment

  • Dual – they can be moderately to very acidic but with a strong aroma as well and are used for bittering and adding flavor

The hops selected for a beer are added during the boil. The duration of the boil and hops variety determine the intensity of the beer’s bitterness, or hoppiness, as well as other characteristics like flavor and aroma.

Forms of Hops

Along with knowing “what are hops”, you should also know that hops are available in several forms. When brewing craft beer in Orlando, we can select from:

  • Dry Whole Leaf — hops flower cones are dried to less than 10 percent moisture content and usually pressed into bales

  • Wet – freshly harvested with about 80 percent moisture content they are perishable and must be used immediately

  • Plugs – a small plug of dried hops used to add hops to ales through the cask bunghole.

  • Pellets – dried hops shredded and pressed into pellets

  • Extracts – extracted hop resin containing acids and oils

  • Powder – lupulin glands containing acids and oils are separated from the flower cones and processed into powder

What’s in Your Beer?

So, what type of hops have been used to craft the Deadly Sins beer you are sipping? Well, if it’s a Wekiva Pale Ale, your beer is hopped with Mandarina Bavaria hops which impart its mild bitterness and floral citrus finish and aroma.

On the other hand, if it’s a Grove IPA, dried El Dorado, Galaxy and Cascade hop varieties combine to provide its citrus fruitiness and complimenting bitterness. As you can see, the right hops make a difference, and what a beautiful difference it is.

Boost Your Craft Beer Terminology (8 Must-Know Terms)

Going to a craft beer brewery can be a fun experience, but it is important to make sure that you understand the terminology so that you can better select a beer. Deadly Sins Brewing is located near Orlando, and we have the beer that you have been craving. We are a top Orlando brewery with a variety of delicious beer for you to try. Contact us to learn more.

1) Ale

Ales are a type of a beer that is made with top fermenting yeast. They are typically fermented at warmer temperatures than lagers, as well as served at warmer temperatures. Sometimes, the term ale is incorrectly used to describe alcoholic strength.

2) Hops

This is, in its natural form, a perennial climbing vine known as Humulus lupulus. It is used for flavoring beer because hops impart aroma and flavor and prevent the growth of bacteria in beer. Hops that are added at the beginning are bittering hops while the middle hops are flavoring hops and those added at the end are aroma hops. Bittering hops are going to have more bittering characteristics the longer they are boiled while aromatic hops that spend a shorter amount of time boiling will provide more aromatic characteristics.

3) Lager

Lagers are beers that are fermented with bottom-fermenting yeast at typically colder temperatures. They are considered to have crisp, clean flavors and are usually served at colder temperatures than ales as well as fermented at colder temperatures than ales.

4) Malt

Malt is processed barley that has been steeped in water and was germinated on either malting floors or in germination boxes. This barley is then dried in kilns to stop their germination and convert the insoluble starch in the barley to soluble substances and sugars in malt.

5) Craft Beer Brewery

A craft beer brewery must meet three standards that are held by the Brewers Association: that they are small, independent, and traditional. To be considered small, they have to produce six million barrels of beer or less. To be considered independent, they have to have less than twenty-five percent of the brewery owned by a beverage alcohol industry member that isn’t a craft brewer. To be considered traditional, they must derive a majority of their total beverage alcohol volume from beers whose flavor comes from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients. The Orlando brewery Deadly Sins Brewing is the perfect example of a craft beer brewery.

6) Fermentation

Fermentation is the chemical conversion of fermentable sugars into almost equal parts ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide gas through the action that yeast takes. The two basic methods of fermentation in brewing at top and bottom fermentation. Top fermentation produces ales while bottom fermentation produces lagers.

7) Mashing

This is the process by which crushed malt is mixed with hot water to convert grain starches to fermentable sugars and non-fermentable carbohydrates. These components add body, head retention, and other characteristics to the final beer. This process also extracts all the color and flavor that will end up in the finished product.

8) Yeast

When the beer is fermenting, the yeast converts the natural malt sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide gas.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Craft Beer

Local breweries can be an incredible place to try a new craft beer, but what don’t you know about craft beer? Deadly Sins Brewing in Winter Park knows that there is a plethora of facts about craft beer that could make you appreciate the beverage more thoroughly. We offer the craft beer Orlando residents love, and we are here to provide you with interesting craft beer facts to make your craft beer experience more interesting. Contact us to learn more about our products or stop in to grab a pint for yourself and try a new craft beer.

1) IPA is the Most Popular Craft Beer

India Pale Ale is the most popular style of craft beer, as it is very hoppy and is brewed mostly with pale malts so that it holds an equal malt-to-hop ratio. The name of IPAs actually comes from the fact that they were initially brewed to be able to survive long voyages for export to India and other foreign countries. While some brewers began to drop the I in IPA in the late 19th century, but they mostly stayed the same as their predecessors.

2) The Favorite Hop is Cascade

The cascade hop is named after the Cascade mountain range that can be found on the west coast of the United States and in some parts of Canada. It has become traditional of American craft beers and it has a slightly bittering property and citrus-y flavor that makes it appealing for many pale ales as well as some lagers. It was first used commercially only recently in 1976, but has since risen greatly in popularity.

3) Shaker Pints are the Worst Glass for Tasting

While craft beer is frequently served in a shaker pint, this is actually the worst glass for tasting craft beer in. A shaker pint is a straight-sided pint glass and it does a poor job of highlighting a beer’s flavor despite how often it can be found in local breweries.

4) Craft Local Breweries Have a Specific Definition

In America, a craft brewery is defined as producer of beer that is independently owned and produces beer in small quantities that are very specific to craft brewing and must follow distinct distribution methods. They also utilize very traditional methods in brewing and fermentation to craft their beers. Breweries such as Deadly Sins Brewing, a brewery offering the craft beer Orlando loves, know firsthand what these specifications are.

5) Craft Beer is Presidential

Historically, and not so distantly in the past, beer was brewed in the homes of presidents while they were in office. Presidents who participated in this tradition were Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Washington, and—most recently—Barack Obama.

What Makes Craft Beer Different from Other Beers?

If you have found yourself wondering, “what is craft beer?” the best place to find an answer is at your local brewery. The Orlando brewery of Deadly Sins Brewing knows how distinct each type of beer can be from one another and it is important to explain these differences to customers so they know what to look for when they are choosing to sample new beer. If you are interested in learning more about craft beer, contact us at Deadly Sins Brewing or visit us to taste out craft beer for yourself.

What is Craft Beer?

In recent years, craft breweries have been becoming more popular in certain communities. This means that people are now consuming more craft beer than before. However, people’s admiration of craft beer extends beyond simply what is popular.

Craft beer is distinct for a few different reasons. A craft brewery, for starters, brews no more than two million gallons of beer each year, and is also owned independently. They have limitations on the way that their beer can be produced, including the requirement that the beer must be at least fifty percent traditional malt instead of oats, barley, or wheat. This makes them distinct from other types of breweries, as these are the things that impact the flavor of the beer itself. Beers that do utilize these ingredients are going to taste different than those that do not, by necessity.

The term “craft beer,” however, does not qualify quantity. Rather, “craft beer” refers to the methodology of its production rather than the actual quantity of beer produced by the brewery. Certain craft beers are considered micro-brews only if they follow the brewing standards for craft beer but the term “micro-brew” does not fit interchangeably with “craft beer.” Micro-brews are actually beers that are brewed at less than 460,000 gallons per year. They have no limitations as to how they can be brewed, but at least seventy five percent of the beer must be sold outside of the brewery.

Where Can You Find the Best Beer?

To find the best beer, you must find a brewery in your area that offers a variety of beers. This can include craft beer, as well as other types of beer which will give you a well-rounded experience.
